2019 Volvo S60 T6 AWD R-Design Review: Trickle Down Effect

2019 volvo s60 t6 r design

The electric G-Class arrives with more power than even the AMG G63 and no sacrifice to its off-roading ability. I was the one who got followed by the CHP for a bit, so I wasn’t exactly tearing rubber with the full might of the Polestar’s potential torque and power. This is the one that was briefly available as a subscription on the rough-starting Care By Volvo program before all 20 cars were snapped up in less than an hour. Volvo was keen to tell me that there will be more available soon enough, maybe even to own.

Performance & Handling

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle (typically, around the 2-3 years mark) with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology. This all-new Volvo — a 3rd-generation car built at a new factory in South Carolina — is about five inches longer than the previous S60, so it has a much roomier back seat. The 2019 Volvo S60 is available through traditional channels or via Care by Volvo, a premium flat-rate subscription service.

Volvo S60 Safety

This T6 model’s engine impressively produces over 300 horsepower while at the same time achieving over 30 miles per gallon on the highway. The Environmental Protection Agency officially rates the S60 T6 AWD R-Design at 21 mpg in the city, 32 on the highway, and 25 combined, and my week spent driving it in all manner of ways supports those numbers. As you might expect on account of it being a Volvo, the S60 is about as safe a car to drive as they come.

T5 Momentum Sedan 4D

Following a short front overhang with an upright grille, muscular wheel arches house aluminum alloy wheels. A deep scallop runs above the rocker panels, rising toward the rear of the vehicle. The greenhouse swoops back from the windshield, and slopes down in the rear, blurring the line between fastback and notchback.

A Bigger Tax Credit For Going Electric: What It Could Mean For Consumers

The Polestar also gets a bespoke gear selector from the rest of the S60 fleet, and it’s not great. Instead of a traditional PRND selector, it’s one of those things that’s more like a joystick, which returns to center after each motion. You have to push it twice to put it in reverse, twice again to get into drive, with a separate button for park. There are steering wheel paddles for shifting, but no locked “manual” selection on the selector, so the car goes back to calling the shots too soon after you make a shift. The S60 T6 AWD R-Design offers a killer combination of everyday drivability and fun-to-drive character (even if it isn't as hot as the S60 can get). The car features multiple drive modes that top out in aggressiveness with Dynamic mode, but even the default Comfort mode is sharper and more engaging to drive than your standard compact luxury sedan.

So many of the challenges in the physics of an SUV are eliminated when the bulk of the car is lower. The star of the show is the nine-inch Sensus Connect touchscreen, flanked by HVAC outlets. A single row of toggles run beneath the touchscreen, anchored with a knob at center. The center console is similarly clean and uncluttered, with a gear selector lever, gnurled drive-mode control wheel, and a tambour-covered pair of cupholders. If you’ve selected the premium Bowers & Wilkens sound system, you’re treated to an eyeball tweeter at the top center of the dash and shiny aluminum speaker grilles on the doors (not to mention amazing sound quality).

It’s nice, it’s comfortable, it does things differently than your average BMW or Audi, but it also doesn’t really stand out in a major way. But the 2019 Volvo S60 is all-new, and now it aims to be more of a true sport sedan than ever. There’s a design rationale that supports the engineering decision to fix the distance between the front axle and the dashboard. Car designers frequently cite this dimension as a key determiner in the elegance of a car’s profile. S60 is thus imbued with a sophisticated profile, as the proportions of the rest of vehicle fall into line.

Rear seat passengers, especially, should be grateful, as compact luxury sedans are notorious for sacrificing rear seat head- and legroom on the altar of form over function – the S60 doesn’t. Being an R-Design model, this S60 test car also features a number of sporty exterior enhancements. The R-Design front grille is a high-gloss piano black mesh that matches the window trim and mirror caps. The lower rear bumper design is also specific to the R-Design and houses dual integrated tailpipes.

The upgraded suspension carries the car’s extra weight perfectly through a good road, with the help of the strong gold-painted brakes, to. It also has gold seatbelts, which sort of makes the S60's otherwise refined and quiet interior feel like a pop up night club in a bank. This S60 T6 AWD R-Design test car also comes with a couple optional upgrades to further improve safety, starting with full LED headlights that actively bend around corners and feature automatic high beams.

If you’re looking for a midsize European sedan offering sublime comfort, good style, abundant safety hardware and sporty driving manners, the U.S.-built Volvo S60 delivers on all counts. Yet, with this S60 tuned to be sportier than average, it still feels like a proper luxury car in that noises from the outside, the tires, and the engine are still well muted and bumpy roads don’t get far past the suspension to your bum. If you’re seeking a proper sports sedan, then perhaps these measures are unwanted, but for those wanting an even balance, the S60 T6 AWD R-Design teeters perfectly between these two poles. The 2019 Volvo S60 is one of the best sedans the company has ever built, and one of the best four-door options on the road today. Gone are the days of the S60 mostly being known for good seats—it’s become the total package.

S60 competitors are a varied lot that includes the Alfa Romeo Giulia, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Lexus IS and Mercedes-Benz C300. The 2019 Volvo S60 is an all-new vehicle based on the company’s SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) chassis that already underpins the XC90 SUV and S90 sedan. Double A-arm front suspension is now used in place of MacPherson struts, and the multilink rear suspension features a transverse composite leaf spring. Otherwise, the only other negative note from the brief time I had in the cars was some of the harder, simpler plastics used on the center cupholder area on the lower Momentum trims. Beyond my slight frustrations with the Polestar Engineered version and its arcade joystick selector, my only other notes on what stood out as non-ideal came from the infotainment system. The system was updated to respond quicker than on past Volvos, and it is responsive.

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has crash tested the new S60 yet, but being a Volvo, it’s a safe bet this sedan will pass with flying colors. With a starting price of only $35,800, the S60, a North American Car of the Year finalist, is a remarkably good deal. Only the Infiniti Q50 ($35,550) and the Acura TLX ($33,000) start lower, and they’re not in the same league as the S60 in terms of style and refinement. The S60’s true competitors – the German trio comprised of the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class – are all the more expensive. In a way, Volvo saved the best for last, but the new S60, especially in the brand’s R-Design configuration, is only this good because of the four vehicles that went through this transformative process before it. Only through them are the S60’s superlative qualities honed to near perfection.

On a positive note, the Sensus chipset has been upgraded for faster boot times, quicker rearview camera responses, and improved navigation recalculations. The original generation of the S60 launched with a trio of inline five-cylinder engines - a naturally aspirated 2.4L with 168 hp and two turbocharged ones with either 197 hp in the 2.4T (later becoming the 2.5T and uprated to 208 hp) or 247 hp in the 2.3L T5. The base engine and T5 had access to five-speed manual and automatic transmissions, but the 2.4T/2.5T was an automatic only, the latter also later gaining an AWD option.

I want all the connecting points of the car—and my passengers—all stressing when I slam it. Then there’s the special Polestar Engineered option on the T8, which boosts power on the hybrid model even higher to 416 HP and 494 lb-ft of torque. Volvo says it’s also capable of an estimated 21 miles on electric power alone. There’s a lot of technology happening to make this little 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produce 316 hp and 296 pound-feet of torque, not the least of which is both a turbocharger and supercharger operating simultaneously. The supercharger does its work at lower RPMs, while the turbocharger takes over at speed to boost power higher in the rev range. They combine beautifully to create a linear power curve that belies the complexities involved to make it all happen.

The interior is so tidy, crisp and, well, Scandinavian that it is really attractive from top to bottom. This being the sportier-looking-than-normal R-Design trim, both the seats and ride of this S60 are more aggressive than the standard version’s, but not so much so that they’re uncomfortable. Remember, R-Design models are more show than go, so even though it looks like it might ride as stiffly as a sports car, this S60 is more relaxed than that.

Engine & Transmission

A large 9-inch Sensus screen plays a big role; swipe the vertically oriented screen one way and you’ll see 19 vehicle functions, everything from ESC Sport mode and Active Bending Lights to cruise control and Road Sign Information. Swipe it the other way and you’ll see 22 Applications that range from stereo settings and Bluetooth to Spotify and Pandora. While Sensus helps de-clutter the S60’s dash, it also forces the driver to look away from the road far too often.

CarBuzz

I started with the S60 T8 Polestar Engineered, since it sounds like an absolute beast on paper. Truth is, it’s not the alien-vaporizing thunderstrike of Thor’s hammer you want it to be. The car undoubtedly looks the part, but that label is going to come down how it is to drive. Each Certified by Volvo vehicle has to pass a rigorous test with more than 170 points, to give you safety and security for every moment.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better (or worse) than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing. TrueCar has 23 used 2019 Volvo S60 R-Design models for sale nationwide, including a 2019 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design AWD and a 2019 Volvo S60 T5 R-Design FWD. Prices for a used 2019 Volvo S60 R-Design currently range from $20,444 to $29,999, with vehicle mileage ranging from 31,049 to 111,197.

Moving up to the S60 R-Design, the front-drive version gets the 250-horsepower engine while the AWD model gets the T8 powertrain that features the supercharged and turbocharged 313-horsepower engine and the 87-horsepower electric rear motor. This S60 PHEV also boasts gloss-black window trim, mirror caps and grille, as well as Nappa leather sport seats, an R-Design steering wheel wrapped in perforated leather, and shift paddles. We drove an S60 R-Design, an all-wheel-drive (AWD) version with a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter inline-4 that sends 316 horsepower to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. This S60 T6 AWD R-Design also comes with the Advanced package that costs $2,500 and includes features like a head-up display, Volvo’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive system, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree-view monitor, and full LED headlights. A few other items like heated rear seats and steering wheel ($750), an upgraded Bowers and Wilkins sound system ($3,200), and special 19-inch R-Design wheels ($800) take this testers price up to $55,490. Yes, but each of those aforementioned German sedans can eclipse that mark quicker when you’re optioning them up.

The S60’s interior also benefits from Volvo’s extensive application of screens. Behind the steering wheel is a 12.3-inch driver’s display featuring all-digital gauges and extensive functionality from the car’s infotainment system. In the center, though, is an even more impressive vertical 9-inch touchscreen running the brand’s Sensus infotainment system.

I tend to spend most of my time in SUVs or in my personal full-size pickup truck, so it was a bit of an adjustment to be seated closer to the pavement. The lower seating position and overall center of gravity made cornering a breeze, without a hint of body roll. I was able to concentrate on “slow in, fast out” when I encountered a curve, and the S60’s unique turbocharged/supercharged engine erased any dips in power. The electric power steering by wire was a particular pleasure, with natural feel and weight. S60 is so nicely balanced that little if any mid-corner correction is required, with minimal understeer.

This generation would usher in the brand-new Drive-E 2.0L four-cylinder powertrains that replaced all the old units. The last and current model - still part of the third of the S60 generations - retained these engines in updated form and also introduced a plug-in hybrid. The 2019 Volvo S60 is a midsize sedan, the start of the third generation of the nameplate. The first-generation S60 ran from 2001 to 2009, and the second-generation vehicle took over from 2010 to 2018.

The S60 is available in three trim levels, each equipped with the Sensus Connect touch-screen interface. The Momentum, with the 250-horsepower engine, includes City Safety with Steering Support, a system that works to mitigate or prevent accidents at intersections and with pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. Also standard on the Momentum are a panoramic sunroof and 18-inch wheels.

The 2019 Volvo S60, along with a wagon variant, the V60, ride on the same platform as the XC90 crossover, S90 sedan, V90 wagon and XC60 crossover. The SPA platform vehicles can have unique wheelbase measurements, ride heights, exterior dimensions and interior layouts, while still using shared components and simple factory production line facilities. By shedding its legacy designs, Volvo has become a nimble manufacturer – almost a like a startup car company with nearly a century of car building experience.

Find used 2019 Volvo S60 R-Design inventory at a TrueCar Certified Dealership near you by entering your zip code and seeing the best matches in your area. In regards to handling, the S60 T6 AWD R-Design feels both light on its feet and glued to the ground thanks to its larger wheel-and-tire setup and all-wheel-drive system. Volvo’s compact sedan offers a classy package with good road manners and a potent PHEV at the top of the lineup. Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. Although it’s at home on twisty pavement, the S60 doesn’t quite have the rewarding tactile driving feedback of, say, the BMW 3 Series or the Mercedes C300.

Next up is Volvo’s advanced Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive system that lets you follow-the-leader on the highway without driver input. The third of the S60 generations 2.0L turbo-four configurations included a 250-hp T5 turbo, a 316-hp T6 twin-charged engine, and a 400-hp plug-in hybrid with a 21-mile electric range using the T6 engine. The T5 later became the 247-hp B5, while the T8 was uprated to 455 hp. The Care By Volvo subscription program has been more than a bit of a mess in the United States, struggling with a number of issues in relation to insurance and getting cars to drivers. You pay a flat monthly payment which covers everything—there’s no down payment, maintenance is included, insurance is included and you can upgrade to a new Volvo every year.

2019 volvo s60 t6 r design

The compact luxury sedan segment is chock full of attractive four-doors, and the S60, in my eyes, is most attractive among them. It’s classically handsome on the outside with just the right amount of minimalist Scandinavian influence, while at the same time exuding a pinch of sex appeal from some well-placed curves. A shrunken S90 comes to mind when looking at it, and the miniaturization of the full-size sedan’s elongated profile helps bring the S60 visual weight into perfect proportion with itself. One swipe left from this menu takes back to the main screen, which has four modules for Navigation, radio, phone and then other device features. Another swipe to the left shows the infotainment applications, like Spotify, Pandora, weather, etc.

On this note, the drive mode selection takes over the entire 12-inch screen, despite being a physical dial, and lingers for around 10 seconds, which is frustrating if you’re trying to check the map or see which radio station you’re on. It all adds up to a sportier, more engaging and more involved driving experience, despite the R-Design having nearly a 100 HP deficit compared to the Polestar Engineered. It’s turbo-super-charged fun, and it makes me struggle to think why this wouldn’t make a shortlist if you’re still shopping for sedans. This Polestar is not slow by any measure—you look down and realize you’re going 20 mph faster than you feel like you are, or planned to (when there isn’t the Explorer of the Law behind you).

RCI Galveston Terminal was initially scheduled for completion/inauguration on September 1, 2022, but was officially opened on November 9th. The new facility is co-owned (50-50) by RCG and Ceres Terminals Inc (provider of stevedore and terminal management services, part of Ceres Terminal Holdings LLC). Ceres currently provides for RCG similar services at Port Canaveral, Tampa, Port NOLA/New Orleans and Baltimore. The port also has facilities to handle cargo ships (bulk freighters and container carriers) and dry dock facilities for marine vessel refurbishments and repairs. The port can handle all types of cargo - containers, dry bulk, liquid bulk, breakbulk, RO-RO (roll-on/roll-off) vessels. There is a terminal switching railroad to facilitate larger cargo movements by rail.

The shipping channel is also regularly deepened to maintain a 150-ft (46-m) wide waterfront marine zone that allows access to piers 10 and 41. Sitting just off the gorgeous Yucatan coast, Cozumel revels in its mythic white-sand beaches and world-class coral reefs. He and his wife (Laurie Steele) were booked on Enchantment Of The Seas for a 5-day Western Caribbean itinerary to Mexico (Costa Maya, Cozumel). Galveston is a port city spread over Galveston Island and Pelican Island, in Texas USA. The city's land area is approx 208 mi2 (539 km2), with population around 50,000.

This is a long-term (20-year initial) lease deal that could be extended (via 4 consecutive 10-year options) up to 60-year exclusive terminal concession rights. The port consists of Pelican Island's southern side, Galveston Island's northern side and Galveston Bay's entrance. (Western Caribbean) From Galveston are also offered Mexico-only roundtrips that visit Cozumel (4-days) and Cozumel with Progreso (5-days). The driving distance between Galveston and Houston is approx 50 mi (80 km), or ~1-hour drive southeast.

If you plan to fly to Galveston, you will arrive at either Hobby Airport, HOU, or George Bush International Airport, IAH, you have to rent a car or take a cruise line shuttle. There is no public transportation to Galveston from the airports in Huston. Galveston Limousine offers service to Galveston cruise ship terminal for USD 30. Taxi fares are USD 100 from George Bush Intercontinental and USD 75 from Hobby Airport. Terminal 2's expansion works started in 2014, financed by Royal Caribbean.

Four-day cruise parking costs US$45, 5-day - US$ 46.25, and 1-week/7-day – US$78.75. The MSC Cruise Terminal complex at Pier 16 comprises a US$100 million terminal facility (docking infrastructure and building/former cargo warehouse), plus a US$42 million parking garage, and an internal roadway. The construction works on "Terminal 3" were planned to start in April 2020, with scheduled completion in November 2021.

In 2023, the cruise port recorded 362 booked berthings (354 ship calls received) and ~42% increase in passengers (~2,98 million) over 2022. When completed, the newest/4th MSC Cruise Terminal is expected to generate an additional 925 jobs, ~US$177M in revenues, ~US$21M in local purchases. In 2017 were handled a total of 258 ship calls and ~1,9 million passengers. In 2017, the port reported a record monthly cruise shipping volume (113,488 embarking passengers) on a total of 33 departures in December. In 2016, it generated US$58,4M in local passenger spending, plus US$19,1M in port-provided services. According to the Port's statistical data, Texas receives from cruise ship operations ~USD 1,42 billion per year (direct spending).
